Professor Plum in the Thrift Store with the Candlestick

I solved it!! Well not the Clue game but the mystery of how to make some real ugly candlesticks fun!

On a recent trip the the Salvation Army store I found these rather sad and ugly looking candlesticks

Hideous right? Well I figured for $1.99 I would bring them home and hopefully give them a much needed makeover.
I started by cleaning those suckers, yuck!  Then I roughed them up with some fine grit sandpaper (for example This One).  Remember the higher the number the grit the finer the sandpaper is.  When spray painting (or really painting ever) you really want to rough up the surface by sanding first, it helps the paint adhere to the material.  After you sand wipe them again with a slightly damp cloth to pick up any dust from the sanding.

Next I attacked my stash of spray painting supplies
And grabbed some handy dandy spray primer
I gave it one nice even coat of the primer, I really recommend priming, again it helps the paint adhere and go on nice and smooth.  I didn't take a pic of what they looked like primed but just envision them mostly white. Next I picked out (well actually went to home depot and bought) a can of Krylon Spray Paint Jade Color

Then I gave my nicely primed candlesticks 2 coats of this nice green Jade color.  The finished product came out looking like this:

Here are some more glamour shots:

They clean up real nicely Professor Plum!
